Legendary jazz drummer Max Roach passed away in New York. (08.16)
RIP
Maxwell Lemuel Roach (January 10, 1924 – August 16, 2007) was a bebop/hard bop percussionist, drummer, and composer. He worked with many of the greatest jazz musicians, including Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Sonny Rollins and Clifford Brown. He is generally considered to be one of the most important drummers in the history of jazz.
Gondolok it pl. a különbözö efektekre meg pedálokra.
William G. Leavitt: Reading Studies for Guitar Lefénymásolnám, letölteném, olcsón akár meg is venném. Tudtok segíteni?
Cserébe adom William G. Leavitt: A Modern Method for Guitar c. könyvének mindhárom részét.

Húha, véletlenül bukkantam rá erre a szemelvényre. Az angol megy, úgyhogy tudom értelmezni a szöveget:
1. Spruce - this is the most common wood used for acoustic guitar tops. It is whitish in colour and a strong one even if used thinly. Commercially, manufacturers used Sitka or Indian Spruce. The most beautiful variation IMO is the Engelmann Spuce - which is usually seen on the most expensive Taylors, Martin D-45s, and the like (maybe the Gibson J-200 but I"m not sure)
2. Maple - this is a very light coloured wood. I wonder if there are manufacturers use Canadian Maple....This is the most common wood used for guitar necks and usually ribs and back of acoustic guitars - Gibson jazz guitars for example. During the early stages of Fender electrics, there is no distinction between the fretboard and the neck itself, they simply place the frets directly on the shaped neck. 90% of Fender electrics use maple neck and so does most of the manufaturers.
3. Rosewood - this is usually associated with fingerboards, acoustic guitar bridges, ribs and sides. All LP standards use rosewood boards. So does modern variations of Teles, Strats and a host of others. Before, the most desirable variation is Brazilian Rosewood - now an almost extinct tree. This has the most beautiful tone color, grain and overall sound projection. You will see Brazilian rosewood on a lot of vintage Ramirez, Torres and Rodriguez classical and flamenco guitars - also on vintage Martin Dreadnaughts. Though you can still find Brazilian Rosewood guitars for sale, be prepared to shell out at least $7,000.00 for one. Today, rosewoods for guitars come from India and Indonesia. Not as tight grained and beautiful to look at but the tone is very similar. To give you an idea, look at recently made Les Pauls, the rosewood fretboards has lots of blemishes.
4. Ebony - I have yet to hear a guitar whose body is made of ebony because it is extremely heavy but it is very successfully used as fretboards. Les Paul Customs, a lot of PRS, Gibson Super 400 are the most commonly associated ebony fingerboards. On the other side a lot of Signature modeled guitars have ebony fretboard - in short mostly used for top dollar models. This wood is known for having a bright but even and tight sound.
5. Mahogany - The Les Paul wood! It is known for a very warm sound and balanced tone projection though it tends to be muddy at times that"s why a lot of LPs have maple tops to accentuate the treble. Les Pauls, PRS, most acoustic back and sides and a lot of guitar necks used mahogany. Need I say more that the Burns Brian May guitar used a lot of mahogany.
6. Basswood - a soft wood good for guitars needed for massive distortion. Majority of heavy metal guitars (Ibanez, Washburn, Jackson, ESP) rely heavily on basswood. basically, it has a good treble response and accentuates a lot of harmonics - needed for feedback and whammy bar antics.
7. Ash - This is known for all those blond Fenders. It has a warm tone that also complements the treble frequencies. So all blond Teles and Strat of the 50s used ash. Lately, some top of the line Fenders use ash again.
8. Alder - Very similar in tone to ash but have a more consistent grain and will be good for bookmatching electric guitar bodies. Most regular strats and teles have alder bodies.
9. Poplar - quite an unusual wood to me, this wood has a sound which crosses alder and basswood. It has a strong midrange but not as defined as ash or mahogany. Jackson and Charvel guitars use this as well as Mexican Fenders.
Fafajták
1. Pau Ferro - this is ironwood Deke. This wood is as good as ebony when it comes to fretboards. Usually used as fretboards for electric basses but administered efficiently on guitars too. The Jeff Beck Strat is the most famous guitar with the Pau Ferro fretboard. But lately, Fender has been cranking out new renditions of Strats and Teles with ironwood fretboards.
2. Cypress - this wood is the second best for acoustic guitar tops. Though this is mainly used on classical and flamenco guitars. This wood gives a more mellow tone that spruce.
3. Cocobolo - an exotic wood more associated with Hindu religious beds that can also be administered well on guitars. Probably the most famous guitar with this wood is the one used by Jerry Garcia - though I don"t remember if it is Rosebud or Tiger. Cocobolo most of the time is used as a guitar body in conjunction with other woods - making laminates perfect for basses. Ken Smith, Alembic and Wal have been known to use Cocobolo.
4. Wenge - another exotic wood used mainly for bass fretboards. Usually used for the high end basses.
5. Korina - this exotic and quite rare wood responds like mahogany except that it has more resonance and sustains better. The earliest Gibson Flying V"s and Explorers used Korina. On the other side of the fence, vintage Ibanez Destroyer (their copy of the explorer) and Iceman (associated with Kiss" Paul Stanley and Steve Miller) used Korina wood.
6. Agathis - an asian timbre that is used on low end, semi-pro and beginners electric. As well as student classical guitars that are made of solid timbers. I don"t know about the sound og this one but if we take into consideration how the cheap Ibanez guitar sound, they present a shrill tone and perfect for kids into punk and hardcore.
7. Nato - another Asian timber used for guitar necks, and back and sides of inexpensie acoustics. Properly aged nato actually sounds good. Try to check out those inexpensive Yamaha folk guitars. They are most probably sold with Nato back and sides, and necks too.
8. Kamagong - this is the Philippine ebony. Before yo-yo became a famous toy, it used to be a famous weapon used by the early Malays that settled in the Philippines. These yo-yo"s used Kamagong. A lot of jazz guitars used Kamagong for fretboards.
9. Lauan - This is used on some mid-priced classical guitars. Another wood abundant in the Philippines.
10. Oak - I doubt it if American guitars used oak but I know that many European electrics specially Hofner used oak for guitar bodies. The Red Special has an oak body that is 100 years old.
11. Birch - notoriously used on Marshall speaker baffles, birch is commonly seen on vintage Hofner Jazz guitars like the Hofner President. But it is sommonly seen as drum shells.
